Warzone Resurrection: Valkyries & Blessed Vestal Laura MK2 Unboxing

So today's post yielded some Warzone goodies and I have to admit to being a little excited about getting these figures after seeing the announcement. Now I know some people will have differing opinions on Prodos Games' decision to re-master figures so soon, but I believe the improvements are significant enough to warrant the decision. So without further delay, here are the toys, starting off with Blessed Vestal Laura.

Darklands: The Khthones

Today I take great pleasure is showing you the finished sunken temple bases and their "inhabitants". The following miniatures are the Khthones, an engineered, reptilian race  that was brought to life by the Atalantes as labourers and warrior slaves. Unsurprisingly the day came, when the strong reptiles started a revolution and became their own lords. The kindred is divided into the following factions: Gorgonares (snake men), Hydrares (hydra men), Liska (basilisk men), Krokodar (alligator men) and the Savra (lizard men). The Khthones were the only kindred that I wanted to collect in a larger scale from the very beginning, as I adore snakes since my childhood, however I will be extending my to the following factions: snakes, hydras and the vasilisks. The lizards and Krokos are just not that interesting to me. Anyway, on-wards to the miniatures!

Hobby: Sunken Temple Bases By Sven

Currently I’m working on the next host for  my Darklands kindreds and due to the failure of my first basing idea, I developed a new one which I’d like to share with you. My first idea was a simple swamp that only consists of water effect and some plants, but the water looked way to flat. I still wanted to keep water on the bases but reduce it quite a bit.
So the concept became “sunken temple” like in this picture.

Horus Heresy: Iron Hands Fresh Reinforcements!

As hinted at yesterday, the Sicaran Venator has arrive and like it's predecessor, it is a stunning model. Now I was originally going to get a second Sicaran Battle Tank for outflanking mass shooting shenanigans, but the rule of cool won out over Iron Hands logic based efficiency. I will be getting the second Autocannon version eventually though, but not until I have finished what is on my 'plate' right now. So where does this leave me in terms of armour? Well I have a stacked Heavy Support section now, and since the troop transports will be all Land Raiders, a expensive but durable starting line up with armour 13/14 the norm. While I do have the Cerberus as my Lords Of War choice, in any small points games, the Sicaran trio will take place as the support wing.

I also got a pack of graviton guns, which have been cause for discussion as a few people do not see the value of tactical support squads armed with this weapon. As a solo unit I would be inclined to agree, the fact these are heavy weapons; make them somewhat static; however when you begin to stack this with Terminators armed with Gravitions guns (more specifically Gorgon's), this changes the playing field. What I have in mind, is the Terminators moving around pinning units into place with their initial landing, followed by Tactical Support squads following up via Land Raider deployment...does create a awesome image! Of course practice over theory, I just need to find a test subject...

Once I have finished the Sicaran, I will be moving onto the Proteus Land Raider which has been gathering dust, before going back to infantry. So it might be a while before the Venator see's light of day. I am planning for a group shot by the end of the week as I am keen to show the recent growth to you all.

Horus Heresy: Iron Hands Sicaran Painting Progress

Today has been very productive, working on the first of my Iron Hands vehicles. The Sicaran is the first tank in my collection to have the colour scheme from the Immortals applied. I am very satisfied with the effect and speed at which I have worked so far and believe that I can build a sizable force, at a consistently high quality, in a short period of time. So wasting no more time, I have summarized the steps I took to get to this stage of the build. The first thing today was to get the base highlights into place - a series of grey tones which allow me to micro paint details later on, this stage was done very quickly and liberally with a air brush.

Darklands: The Fomoraic

Today I'd like to show you another kindred of Darklands, the tabletop game by Mierce Miniatures: The Fomoraic. Actually I wanted to spare those for a later article, as one of the models is very special to me and they actually aren't the second host I painted. Those with keen eyes might have spotted my second host on one of the pictures of the Ysian article, but I'm still waiting for a base and a model to complete these. So here we are.

Horus Heresy: Sicaran Battle Tank Arrives!

Both infantry and armoured reinforcements arrived this morning and just in the nick of time, as I really need a (short) break from infantry to prevent a long burnout. I have had my eyes on the Sicaran Battle Tank since release, but it was only with the resurrection of my Iron Hands army that I decided to take the plunge and drop some coin. Not only does this vehicle have a great aesthetic to it, but it also has a fantastic build quality that took me completely by surprise.

Forge World: Mortarion Sighted!

The latest Forge World News Flash had the expected announcement of new t-shirts and hoodies that they showed off earlier in the week, so you can imagine my surprise when i stumbled onto this picture...

Death Guard fans attending the Horus Heresy Weekender II will be delighted I am sure!

Darklands: The Ysians

It's been quite a while since my last post on this blog and it seems that the fast Kingdom Death painting wore me out. Also I still have lots of Kingdom Death miniatures on the table, I felt the urge to do some "easy painting" to get myself motivated again. The motivation returned, but for another part of my collection. Shortly after the KD Kickstarter I discovered another manufacturer called Mierce Miniatures from the UK, who are producing some of the nicest and most stunning resin models I have ever seen. By now I backed all three of their Kickstarter projects and my collection grows constantly, but I did not start painting them immediately, as I was unsure whether I should use them for dioramas, Warhammer stand-ins or for the actual game they're supposed for called Darklands.

Recently I decided for the later solution and built some smallish hosts from my collection. In the following I'd like to present you the first: The Ysians.

Site News: New Writer Joins The 14th Legion

It is my great pleasure to announce that Sven aka deadlydeceiver will be joining the 14th legion blog posting team. Regular readers will remember his excellent Kingdom Death work from last year, that were the focal point of the Reader's Submission articles for almost seven weeks running. The speed and level of work that Sven produces is phenomenal and I am sure his choice of non-main stream miniature products will appeal to a huge audience, Sven's upcoming first post will be up tomorrow and deals with the Mierce Miniatures line. I can't wait! Well enough from, time for Sven to 'formally' introduce himself...

Hi there, my name is Sven aka deadlydeceiver. I've been a passionate miniature painter, collector and gamer for over 14 years now. Rather unsurprisingly my first tabletop game was Warhammer and later also Warhammer 40K, but in the past years the gaming part of the hobby was reduced to rather rare private games and that freed more time for painting and new exiting miniature ranges. My current collection consists only of 2 of my previously 7 Games Workshop armies, a nearly complete set of Kingdom Death and fast growing hosts of Mierce Miniatures' Darklands-range. Especially with the rise of Kickstarter I came across new miniature lines and games that got me interested and which I'd like to share with you.

My active projects comprise Mierce, Kingdom Death and Warhammer Forge Chaos Dwarfs. In not so far future I'll hopefully be able to show some Imbrian Arts, Kabuki and Shadows of Brimstone models and might even return to my good old Dark Eldar once in a while.

Site News: Monday Round Up

Good morning all, I hope you had a great weekend! last week was a slurry of activity as I cracked on with my Iron Hands Immortals and planned out my new Warhammer Fantasy Army. Warzone has taken a back seat for the moment simply due to burn out, but I hope to return to either my Mishima or Buahaus collection when wave 2 finally arrives. I have to admit, Prodos are making it very difficult to work on other projects, with their constant teasing!

Iron Hands Project
I ended up having visitors on Sunday evening, so could not finish off the Immortals as intended, so today I am hoping to make up for lost time. All that is really left to do now, is get the Iron Hand icons on the shield painted and apply weathering/do the bases. While it does sound like a lot, it does not necessarily mean it will be done quickly, as I am doing this project without any form of planning and experimenting at every step. However once I have got a formula I like, it will be applied with speed to the whole army. Below is the current state of the Medusan Immortals and a idea of how all the infantry will look at a basic level.

Things to do after this are bulk up the Tactical Legionnaires (only have 5 at the moment!) and get some more tanks - the Sicaran is appealing to me the most right now. As the can see from the last pictures I do have another five Immortals waiting for paint, I will probably chain paint them with the Tactical infantry, now that I have a defined scheme I will eventually apply it to a full unit of twenty strong, backed up with a Spartan transport - not very efficient game wise, but I think it will look pretty awesome. The Tacitical's will stay at 10 strong, but all have Land Raiders as dedicated transports...

Wood Elves Project
Yes I was unable to resist the call of the wild! I am a closet fan of anything Elvish having been more of an avid Chaos collector in the past. However the original barbaric image of the Wood Elves have always stood out and tempted me. The new model range brings some of that feral ferocity in the form of the new Wild Riders so naturally I jumped at the chance to own/work on these figures. As of now I have a box of Eternal Guard, Wild Riders, Treeman and a High Born with bow to start with.

This collection will be a slow burn project, with the odd post appearing here and there, the main priority still remains the Iron Hands, but I have to admit to being a little excited about painting something Fantasy again, I enjoy swords and sorcery just as much as tank and missile.

So that is a streamline look at what happened last week in my miniatures world, and gives you a heads up of what is to come. I have a solid week or so to myself to go ahead and get painting and I intend to produce results. Both projects have enough miniatures already to make nice looking block of troops when painted, so it is now just a question of getting them done, after that who knows, I might drift back to Warzone or AvP might arrive. Also before I forget the gaming room is still waiting for the carpeting to be done, before I move in, but already I can envision a full table set up and paint area...and it looks really good, I can't wait to get that finished and share the fruits of my labours!

Horus Heresy: Final Phases of Medusan Immortals!

Having managed to get a couple of days dedicated painting, I am now putting the final touches to my Medusan Immortals squad. Just the gun glows and weathering to go before I can wrap up this portion of the army and move onto some vehicles (and then back to infantry again!). I have to say that group shots never really look right in my eyes, I prefer close ups where viewers can see every line, flake and bit of lint.
