Reader's Showcase #8: Kingdom Death Preacher And Preacher Pin-Up

Greetings everyone, here is probably the last Reader's Showcase of the year and it is a good one. I actually intended to post this one before the Christmas holidays hit, but time just was not on my side. Joys of being the Christmas host means personal things such as the blog and painting must take a back seat, but on the plus side I do have some tasty gaming loot to share with everyone, anyway onwards to the figures! Sven rings out the year with another set of amazing Kingdom Death figures, this time he graces the pages of the 14th Legion blog with the Preacher and Preacher Pin-Up miniatures...

Merry Christmas

To all my readers and followers, thank you for hanging out with me in my little hobby corner. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and end up with huge stacks of new resin, plastic and metal toys!

Best wishes,

Warzone: Mishima Hatamoto Test Scheme

Hello everyone on this cold, wet and windy night! The fence has blown down (again) and the dog sprayed the living with mud, in typical winter fashion. Regular readers will know that I have been ecstatic with my huge order for Warzone: Resurrection arriving over the weekend. I had intended to do an un-boxing post/video, but in my enthusiasm I set about working on figures almost straight away. Despite having a massive Bauhuas collection (every figure available during the Kickstarter) I ultimately dove into my Mishima miniatures - a mere 25 in comparison. As of today, I have five Ronin and the Meka. built/primed and also five Hatamoto built, primed and in process of painting. I don't think I will be able to finish before Christmas Day, but I will be making a very good go at it, and at the very least I will have had a good practice at building and painting Warzone miniatures.

Site News: Warzone Resurrection Is Here!

A very quick post here as I am extremely excited about what has arrive today, no less than 3 boxes taped together of Prodos Games Warzone: Resurrection miniatures, books and cards! As you can imagine I am going to be spending quite a bit of time going through and checking what is here and what is not (there is a second wave of releases coming next month). Needless to say, there will be a lot of new content coming to the blog and not a moment to soon, with Christmas a few days away.

So thank you Jarek and Rob of Prodos Games, your communication throughout has been excellent, even going so far as to phone me in person to reassure and inform me of the order status. It is the little things like that, that go a long way to building a positive reputation in the community.

Wip: Disaster Strikes My Tactical Squad

Well I managed to blow it...In typical one step forward, two steps back this squad has gone from being on the verge of completion to far from done. I made the mistake of trying to do the decals today, normally not a suspicious person; it does seems that the curse of Friday 13th has struck today. So what exactly is the problem? Well today I actually managed to finish everything for the Tactical Squad bar markings, with Forge World transfers and Microsol/Microset in hand, I thought this would be a quick and easy final home stretch.

Alas not to be...Despite following the guides ie: gloss varnish area etc the transfer turned out bad, fair enough I thought, lets remove the transfer and start again. Not a chance. The Microset ended up stripping the varnish underneath and the paint, leaving the shoulders pads with scratches of plastic. I even managed to balls up the banner, with the paint turning out grainy at one end and glossy due to some problem with the drying, the other end!

So the remedy has been to carefully remove the shoulder pads and strip them completely for an re-painting tomorrow. In regards to the iconography, I am probably going to hand paint everything, as this at least gives me total control of how it looks and also allows me much greater control of mistakes, compared to using transfers and chemicals. With the banner, I am going to mask the veteran sergeant and airbrush it, so that it matches everything else.

There was a reason I stopped using transfers long ago, today was quite a bitter reminder as too why I did in the first place...Luckily no damage was done to the figures when removing the pads, but I am calling it a day, first thing tomorrow will be clean up and some free hand practice.

Thanks for reading (a fairly disheartened!)

Reader's Showcase #7: Kingdom Death Forge Priest & Mother

Sven is back with two more complete Kingdom Death figures: The Forge Priest and the Mother. These are two very different figures and sculpts, with one being a violent hammer swinging action pose, while the other is a static, eerie ritual to bloody demonic birth. But enough from me, I will let the photos (and Sven) do the talking for me.

Please note that the Mother figure is NSFW

Wip: Crimson Fists Tactical Squad

I am reaching the finish point with this squad of Space Marines, just a few final details and highlights to complete before I move onto the final phase of adding transfers. I have learnt a lot working on this squad so far, especially in the sharp highlight's area, which previously I had struggled with ie Minotaurs and Dark Angels. The Crimson gloves and details are just how I want them, as a rich contrast to the midnight blue of their armour. I love the description used in the Traitor's Gorge novella, where the Crimson Fist's armour is so dark that they blend into the shadows of night, a great image in my mind.

Adding the transfers will be a relatively new thing for me, I have not used decals in over 20 years, so I expect to lose some time figuring out the 'right' way of doing things. I am armed with Micro Sol and Micro Set solution, but have done only minimal reading up on the proper way to use these two solution. I am sure that after a practice run tomorrow/Wednesday I will be able to crack on and finish the rest of the squad by the end of the week. If I can finish a squad before Christmas hits to accompany my Captain, I will be very pleased.

In regards to the Captain, he won't be sitting alone for too long, I have started chopping away at some old figures in my collection and am slowly piecing together a Command Squad, with a Rogue Trader themed Apothecary, I have even managed to get my hands on the new Reclusiarch figure as an individual piece to add to the company command.

I am really looking forward to blogging about those once the Tactical Squad is complete and am far happier with my descision to work on a background base army over a gaming list.

Reader's Showcase #5: Kingdom Death Dung Beetle Knight

Having completed no less than three figures last week, I would not have been surprised if Sven our resident Kingdom Death fantastic had decided to take to rest. Not a chance, Sven is back with yet another Kingdom Death figure in the form of the Dung Beetle knight. To make things even better, he actually completed this figure only three days after last weeks Showcase post, so without further delay...

Reader's Showcase #4: Kingdom Death Great Game Hunters

The winter cold certainly has not affected Sven's productivity, who has once again has some excellent eye candy for us. Not satisfied with just one figure, he has in fact finished and photographed all three of Kingdom Death's Great Game Hunter miniatures.

Wip: Proteus Land Raider & Deimos Vindicator

I have decided to put a bit more time into building my (small) vehicle pool these last two weeks. I was away this weekend just gone so was unable to get a post up, but here non the less is my current progress. The Proteus Land Raider which I showed off on the 4th of November is going well under way in terms of construction, there are a few odd gaps which I have fixed up with plasti card, but other than that it has been a pleasant build with very little in the way of warped items. This week, my intention is greenstuff the gaps and smooth any rough areas of on the model, before I finish cleaning the weapons and extras. I don't really want to put a time frame on it, but I will be optimistic and say that by the end of the week, painting will have begun.

Reader's Showcase#3: Kingdom Death Chosen

Defying the dreaded seasonal cold and flu, Sven strikes back for a third week in a row with yet another fantastic Kingdom Death figure - The Chosen. He mentioned this week very briefly in last weeks Showcase figure - The Grand Mother and follows up with this stunning figure to explain a little more on just how he got that cool feathered effect.

Gallery: 25th Anniversary Crimson Fist Space Marine Captain

Games Workhop's Warhammer 40,000 25th Anniversary celebration figure, the Crimson Fists Captain from the cover of the Rogue Trader rule book, this figure is also the test figure for the colour scheme of my Crimson fists army. Despite being a finecast figure, there was very little prep work be done, just a few cast lines and the cables needed some re-building with green stuff. I was pretty much able to go straight to undercoat and paint within 15 to 20 minutes. This figure itself was straight forward to paint and very nostalgic at the same time. I had a great time painting the MK6 armour and as a result I have started building a Sternguard squad that is majority Corvus armour, to accompany this figure.

Reader's Showcase #2: Kingdom Death Grand Mother

Sven is back with another devilishly good Kingdom Death painted figure in the form of the disturbingly alluring Grand Mother miniature.

Wip: Devastators, Terminators & Land Raider

My Crimson Fists army rolls on (slowly but surely), so I thought I would share a few photos of whats on the table, waiting for painting. It has taken me a while to get myself sorted but I am still enjoying my army, fuelled by passages from Rynn's World and Traitor's Gorge. While I have enjoyed every unit I have converted, it is my latest two acquisitions that I am really looking forward to working on in the future.

Devastator Squad
This unit has actually been done for a while as it was one of the first units I built from spare bits. Like the rest of the army, there is a mix of 'modern' arms mixed with various marks of armour to try and keep a Rogue Trader feel (quite a few MK 6). The idea is currently three missile launchers and one lascannon (which has not been stuck on yet) but I might just go for four missile launchers...still trying to decide on what to do and while originally I wanted a lascannon in the mix, I think four old style missile launchers will look far better. What does everyone think?

Terminator Squad
Long time readers know I love Tactical Terminators and this is down to the fact that I got the Rogue Trader Terminator box set as a birthday present when I was young - great memories. For this unit, I used a mix of the new Dark Angels Deathwing, regular Terminators and Forge World shoulders to try and come up with something a little more dynamic than the current plastic box set. Unlike my previous Terminator units, I have gone for the classic configuration of assault cannon and chain fist in the unit, once again out of nostalgia. There is still a bit of work to do, namely on the squad leader in the form of a banner and some screen stuff, which needs to be sculpted to give a beaten metal sheet look.

Land Raider Proteus
This kit was a random gift from the missus and I am incredibly grateful for it! I am in pure nostalgia heaven with this kit as I am huge fan of the old Land Raider, so as you can imagine I am incredibly happy to see it back in a modernised form. It comes with a lot of various pieces and there are more than a few bits that are flash covered and bent out of shape. Right now my intention is to use it as a Heavy Support choice to transport Pedro Kantor and a Sternguard squad. The tank arrived in the typical giant size Forge World plastic bag with two smaller bags inside containing the weapons array and tracks. It does make me wonder though; especially with the larger and heavier kits; why Forge World does not box the smaller bits like antennas etc I have had a few issues in the past where the larger blocks of resin have crushed and snapped smaller parts, all because they are packed in plastic doggie bags.

As to be expected with Forge world kits, there are huge lumps of excess resin and it will take a while to get this kit cleaned and washed before I can even think about gluing it together. But generally speaking, the cast is good with the main chassis being in one piece and not warped in any major extent.

However, the smaller parts; especially the tracks; have got some pretty severe cast lines and mild warping. It looks simple enough to work into place but is just extra work on top of what will already be a large job. My intention is use the kit as a standard codex land Raider in games and I hope that who ever I face with this tank, will not give me too much grief using standard rules, as it is a classic piece (well at least in design) and matches my army's look perfectly. Depending on how well this build goes, I might get another one to act as transport for a second Sternguard Squad...expensive but will look awesome on the table!

So that's a little peek into whats in line for my Crimson fists army, I hope to show some painted stuff soon.

Thanks for reading,

Reader's Showcase #1: Kingdom Death Forge God

I have been a fan of Kingdom Death miniatures for quite some time. I first wrote about the amazing figures produced by Adam and his team back in May 2010, and had been religiously collecting the Limited Edition first runs; until the Kickstarter came about. But despite having every figure release prior to the KS launch, I only ever managed to paint a handful of models for this amazing range (due to major time constraints), and although ultimately I have stopped working on my own personal collection, there are plenty of people out there who have the time and patience to give the Kingdom Death range the attention it deserves. One such person is a very talented painter named Sven, and it is with great pleasure that I introduce his latest Kingdom Death piece, the mighty Forge God.

Please be sure to check out the full post as there is plenty of painted miniature eye candy, there are gory bits so some readers may wish to take a NSFW approach just incase. But believe me when I say, this figure is worth the view.

Site Update: Stuff On The Table

Not the post I had intending for my Crimson Fists, but proof that I am still interested in that project. I have spent a lot of time (as you can probably see in the photos) sourcing Forge World and various Space Marine parts for my Crimson Fists, and while I have some form of list in my head, the real priority is to get this group of miniatures looking as interesting as possible. What I am hoping for is a identity that not only ties in with the old Rogue Trader artwork, but also has a little bit of my personality in there through intricate conversions and cool poses. On the painting side, I think this project is shaping up to be some of my best work to date, which is great for my confidence.

First up, a messy shot of what will soon be the bulk of my Crimson Fists army.

I have literally spent an two whole weeks trolling bits stores and waiting on bits to arrive. So many little envelopes and packages have been arriving on a daily basis, that I am sure the Postman thinks I am dealing in dodgy substances. It probably does not help with me answering the door wearing a pair of black latex gloves and respirator...The Sternguard are still in the box, to minimise clutter, but are next on the painting list after the Tactical Squad.

The tactical squad is pretty much finished: guns, back packs and transfers are all that are left to do. Today I had enough time to get shoulder pads and helmets done, and more importantly painted the Sergeant's head. It had been a while since I had painted human skin (Warrior Priest was the last figure with any skin), and quite frankly I am pleased with the way it has turned out as I have built on the experience working on the Priest. It is on par with the way I used to paint skin before I stopped painting and with a little more practice I expect to finally meet my personal expectations.

Awesome how cool stuff looks, when they have heads on! You can also see the a bit more of the overall colour scheme of my Crimson Fists, the much darker blue with sharp highlights works well for me - ignore the fist though, it still needs work - but I will be interested to see how it works on vehicles. The Sergeant will not be a veteran, to represent a relatively fresh tactical squad, so will only have his left fist painted red, the combi-weapon that will be equipped hass a pin in it to allow changing from melta to what ever I need on the day.

I love the new Tactical Squad box set as I have stated in the past. The poses are a lot better, with the legs looking much more natural compared to the 3rd edition version, it is just a shame that I will not be fielding more than one squad, but at least I have the Sternguard (and other cool looking units) to look forward to. I think ultimately one of the best things about collecting a Crimson Fists army is this - Fluff wise the majority of the force will be veterans, scouts, devastators and assault marines; all very interesting units; but non more so than veteran units like Sternguard, Vanguard, Terminators and Honour Guard who all have their own personalised armour and heraldries. It is almost like painting units of characters, which suits me best and I really look forward to sharing these paint jobs with you all very soon.

Site News: Alive & Still Kicking

With almost three weeks of 'radio silence' you would be (un)forgiven for thinking that I have lost steam/given up on yet another project, but alas not so! Actually it has been the complete opposite. Admittedly I have lost some time doing things I should not be ie online games and a touch of DoW 2 (research!). But that has not stopped me from knuckling down and doing what I am meant to be doing - More painting! So this is just a quick run down as to what has been going on these last two weeks and what to expect this autumn. Sadly no pictures this time but I promise to make up for it with the next update - Which will be the first 'official' Crimson Fists project update. Right now I am toying with the idea of a video update/diary as opposed to teh standard wall of text with photo injections - thoughts anyone?

In terms of progress, the 25th Anniversary figure I showed off a couple of weeks back is finished, and was the test model for the overall colour scheme I will be using for the whole army. I am currently working on the new Tactical Squad box set and currently have all the legs fully painted and based, I intend to make a good start on the torsos and arms over this weekend...assuming I am not distracted: By the Devastator Squad I have been building over the last two days! Bits have been flying form every corner of Europe to complete this next squad on my painting list, and I have to say I am really looking forward to painting this unit up.

Gamesday is tomorrow, so I am sure loads of people (including myself) will be scouring blogs for all the juicy gossip, so my next update will probably be end of next week, so until then.

Site News: Space Marine Purchase List

With the Space Marine 6th Ed release mere hours away, I have decided to share exactly what I have coming my way in the post for this release.

Miniatures
As I mentioned in my post a couple of days ago, I have just started a brand new Crimson Fists army. I am proudly staring at the newest recruits to the force, in the form of 3 boltgun armed scouts, built from spares lying around my bits box, I have purchased parts for two more scouts and will probably bring the squad up to 10 men. However this weekend is all about the new toys and from these awesome  new releases I am expecting the following miniatures:

Librarian
The fact that this is a great model alone, guarantees purchase. In the greater scheme of things, I do like having a psyker in the army but in this case he will be competing with Pedro Kantor for the HQ slot. So far from what I have read, a Librarian can take the role of providing supportive powers or direct damage. What I am hoping is that the old 5th Edition Gate Librarian is still a viable option with this release as I do like the idea of scoring Sternguard doing last minute objective blitz's.

Sternguard
Crimson Fists would not really be complete without a squad (or two) of these guys, the sheer amount of parts, that this kit provides is worth the price alone for future Space Marine kit bashes. Right now the intention is to build these in the standard combi-melta configuration with a heavy flamer, I do not think I will be going with the grav weapon options as the special ammunition should be enough anti-infantry. I also do not think there will be much synergy between grav weapons and Imperial Fists tactics, and of course the meltas will have the dual purpose anyway of anti terminator shots if no armour is present - this is subject to Internet rumours and can/will change as soon as I have read the codex thoroughly.

Tactical Squad
I love the re-cut Tactical Squad, I prefer the leg stances so much more than the original 3rd edition squad and of course there are much more weapon options like the grav guns and combi weapon. For this reason alone I have bought a box of Tactical Marines. While I intend to bulk the Crimson Fists force with scoring Sternguard and Scouts (to keep in theme), I think one squad of Tactical Space Marines will fit in nicely in terms of background and game utility. I am currently thinking of aggressive forward tactics, and if this is the case a transport may be in order for mobility.

Centurion Squad
Ok, I will be honest and say that this unit bugged me a lot when I first saw them. However much like in Warhammer Fantasy, the push for certain unit types to be overpowered to generate sales cannot be overlooked. The prospect of firing two las-cannons and chest mounted (typhoon?) missile launchers in combination with Imperial Fists Chapter Tactics - Tank Hunters, is too good to pass up. This will make a formidable fire base that most opponents will not be able to ignore. Of course I could always go with the armour bane Assault Centurions, which will fulfil the same purpose - from a melee perspective, but ultimately require much more aggressive tactics with bigger risks...decisions...decisions...

Codex Space Marines Enhanced Edition
I previously purchased the 6th Ed Chaos Daemons codex and was very surprised with how good it was, I am expecting the if not better from the Space Marine version. Of course there is the added bonus of what looks like a codex specific force selector programme, which could possibly be the best thing about the digital editons. At time of writing I have paid for the codex but am just waiting on downloads to initialise and complete, perhaps GW have decided not to allow downloads to begin too far ahead of retail opening, to prevent loss of store revenue - who knows? As soon as this codex downloads and I have had a read, I will share my thoughts.

Sadly this may be all the hobby I get to do this weekend, I have a wedding to go to in 9 hours and can't get any sleep due to tooth ache caused by an overly hard cookie. If I am not too shattered from the post wedding celebrations I intend to spend Sunday doing intense amounts of painting. So what are you most looking forward to with this release and why? What do you love or loathe of the 6th Ed Space Marine list?

Until next time, have faith in your boltgun, praise the Emperor and may you always roll 6's!

Thanks for reading,
