Monday Previews!

Greetings and welcome to another Monday Previews! So lets have a look and see what the writers of Send The Eighth! are up to...

Chris/DiStudios
I had a lot of deliveries last week, including my much anticipated Corpse Taker unit by Mierce Miniatures. Like the majority of the Mierce miniatures range, these are absolutely stunning. Loaded with detail and cast in a resin I find easy to work with, I managed to clean and the remainder of the unit over the weekend (I bought the Champion at Salute). So this week, the plan is to finish that final Troll, before moving on to the Corpse Taker unit.

The paint scheme will be black, highlighted with blues and possibly purples if I can get the mixes right, so in theory it should be relatively quick when compared to the Troll paint scheme. Either way, working on something other than green is appreciated at this point of time, with trolls and Dark Angels all over the place!

I’m currently working on the bases for the Kingsmen and the Kings Hand. This is basically the main base, just some flock and maybe one of the dry trees missing.

The Kings Hand is a high ranking officer while the Kingsmen are just basic troops. Nevertheless the Kingsmen are quite a bit bigger than the Hand and so I decided to put it on a elevated base, to underline its rank.

Finally there are just some details on the Kingsmen left to do and then I’m moving on to something else. Maybe the Butcher, maybe some Darklands… I’m not yet decided.

Thought I'd try something a little different this week and actually paint something. After putting Talos together last week I was motivated to put some paint on him.  Started with a black undercoat, then Vallejo Tinny Tin.

Mixed that with Model Brass and then the Brass itself.  Went over that with Dark tone to reduce the shine and used a Metallic green in the eye holes, sorry can't remember the make off hand.

For the base I sanded it, then used brown ink and lightly brushed some stonewall grey.  Edged the base in a gunmetal with silver for the markers. He isn't finished yet but definitely getting there and I am very happy with the way he's turned out.

With a new Mierce Miniatures Kickstarter happening this week (more details on that tomorrow!), I sense a disturbance in the painting force...I suspect that the writers will be going all out on Dark Lands Miniatures in the future, and I for one will be following suit!

Oldhammer Sundays: DRAG5 - Great Imperial Dragon #2

Welcome to Oldhammer Sundays! I have to be honest, this is starting to become one of my favourite model making days, as it gives me a chance to rummage around my old boxes and walk down memory lane. This week I continue working on DRAG5 - The Great Imperial Dragon, with a focus on the base details.

Each of the DRAG releases, had mini story lines associated to the miniature. This helped to translate the character of the miniature to the painter, which is my opinion was a nice little addition. In the case of the Imperial Dragon, I wanted to go my own route of this dragon having taken over another dragon's horde. So to get this across I dug out some old rpg treasure bits I had, and placed them around the skull of dragon skull accessory.

Original I wanted to include some translucent gems, but I felt they were a little on the large side for this model, so instead I added some mushrooms to complete the 'cave' look. There is still a little tidying to do to the base, but for all intents, this is the final look for the base. I might add some foliage at the end; such as ivy, brush, moss etc but I will keep to a minimum.

This model is pretty much ready for the paint phase now, but I am just waiting for a shipment of paints to arrive before I make a start. Right now I am thinking a deep red, with bone plates...I am excited and at the same time apprehensive, as it has been a very long time since I have painted a dragon miniature!

Dark Angels: Command Squad

It almost seems like a little bit of history repeating, the release of the 7th edition Codex: Dark Angels, has sparked a bit of a revival in me.

So today I am sharing the starts of a new Dark Angels army, to go with the lovely new Interrogator Chaplain kit. Below is a picture of a quick kit bash of a command squad. Using parts from my old Dark Angels project and spares from my Horus Heresy bits box, I have decided to go with four veterans and an Apothecary all in robes. For the standard bearer, while I normally jump at the chance to free hand, I am extremely curious to see how good the banner decals are when applied so I will be using the Dark Angels decal set. If all goes well, it will save me loads of time too!

The bolter arms have been left off intentionally, as I will be cutting the hands off, to accommodate the new range of special and combi weapons. With the use of magnets, I will be able to tailor this squad against a wide range of opponents. You have probably noticed the lack of Company Champion, which has been done on purpose as I am tailoring specifically for fire power goodness.

The squad is all but complete, so painting should start over the weekend. I am not aiming for this collection to be game viable, but the fact it is 40k probably means I will be more likely to get games in, than with my other miniature collections.

Gallery: Darklands Fomoraic Belech by Sven

This special miniature was one of my favourites since the day I saw its artwork during the first Darklands Kickstarter. As usual most art by Danny Cruz intrigues me, but Roberto Chaudron did such a perfect job when sculpting it, I was just blown away.

Monday Previews!

Greetings all, I hope you had a productive weekend! It is Monday, which means time to see what the writers here at Send The Eighth are working on.

Chris/DiStudios
While Trolls are still at the forefront of my mind, I have decided to start looking at the larger models in the collection. While all the models are fantastic, I have decided to single out the Blood-Maw Vore as my next painting project. There are a couple of reason for this choice, in terms of clean up, it has the least to do and right now I need something I can really just jump into painting. Secondly, I was originally going to do a joint article with Sven as he works on his Blood-Maw, however due to illness, we have both decided that I should go ahead with my one.

Also sneaking into the photos, is a project from my new Oldhammer Sundays series and amusingly a lone Space Marine for a new upcoming Dark Angels project! So quite a variety from next week onwards, a little bit of something for everyone as they say!

After the short holiday my two servants of the King are nearing completion and I've laid my eyes on yet another Kingdom Death piece which I have lying around for quite a while. The Butcher!

The model has already been built for several month, but I always pushed it aside, because all those lanterns look like a pain to paint and I couldn't fully recall how I painted the Forsaker armour (a Butcher is basically a Forsaker gone nuts). Luckily I had the awesome idea to read it up in my own article. So I guess it's about time to tackle it.

This weeks Mierce model is Talos, Colossus of Bronze.  At the moment he is the only member of the Alalantes faction, although  other figures should soon be available if you have Kickstarter access.

I have long been a fan of Jason and the Argonauts, the old movie featuring Ray Harryhausen's special effects. So when I saw this I had to have it.  At just over 14cm high it is a lovely model and as its one of the earlier sculpts there aren't too many parts making it a very easy piece to construct.

So there you have it, lots of hard work that should result in some fantastic battle reports in the future. Still no sign of AvP for the team, but here is hoping that next week has a nice surprise.

Oldhammer Sundays: DRAG5 - Great Imperial Dragon #1

Welcome to the first article in a new series - Oldhammer Sundays. In this series I will be revamping classic Citadel figures from my collection. Today I take a look at an old favourite of mine: DRAG5 - The Great Imperial Dragon from 1987.

Gallery: Darklands Norse - Unnolg, Troll Warrior By DiStudios

Unnolg is the latest Troll to be completed for my collection. Sporting a very mean looking cleaver, he exudes nastiness. Having now done a lot of research into the Mierce Troll range, it turns out that the weapon load is pretty much an accident. At the time of design, there was no game being developed, as a result, sculptors had a free reign as to how to equip the trolls. With a game now in works, it seems that Unnolg will actually belong to a unit exclusively armed with two handed weapons...that will look simply brutalicious on the table! Below is Mierce Miniature's background for him.

It is said that the Thurs, what others call Trolls, do not travel well over the seas. It suits neither their temperament nor their bellies, these people say, and if they are to be fought it should be when they are upon the shore, recovering from their journey, their stomachs queasy and their minds ill-brought. Perhaps these tales have a grain of truth in them. Perhaps they are told simply to give courage to those warriors who would confront the Norse. Whatever the truth of the matter, few who tell the tale have fought those such as Unnolg, a Thurs of slime and wart, of immense strength and unflinching brutality, for even as their ships are beaching the Trolls leap to the shore, bellowing and howling, charging into the weakling men sent against them and scattering them like leaves in the wind. Unnolg and his kin may indeed travel poorly across the seas; but they care not, for they would sail to the end of the world if there were blood to be spilled.

Product Review: Feldherr Maxi Logo Case

First off I would like to say a big thank you to Sven of Feldherr Figure Cases, the team and I were simply blown away by the range of samples provided for us to review. Due to the number of samples we have received, I have decided to split the reviews over three separate articles. In today's article, I will be looking at Feldherr's Maxi Logo Case, a soft case with capacity for skirmish to medium sized armies.

The Maxi Logo Case, is a fabric soft shell case useful for carrying armies of skirmish to medium sized armies, depending on foam load out. At first glance, compared to main stream miniature carry cases, the Maxi Logo Case looks deceptively small. However it can hold a surprising 180 infantry figures when given the infantry foam load out option; more than enough for those Warhammer Fantasy armies or 40K Green Wave Orks; additionally each miniature gets it's own separate compartments in the tray, as opposed to smashing everything together like the GW Crusade foam...By choosing more balanced foam combination of vehicles/monsters and infantry, you could quite easily fit a good sized 2000 point army for Warhammer Fantasy, 40K or other systems.

Gallery: Kingdom Death Nightmare Ram By Sven

**This is Kingdom Death NSFW!**

The artwork of the Nightmare Ram has been around for a good while before the release of the miniature. If I recall correctly it spread around the time that the Lion God expansion for Kingdom Death: Monster was revealed. Someone had found the Lion Gods artwork on the artists DeviantArt page and the Ram was on the same sheet. Also not officially confirmed it was quite obvious for whom this concept with all the hands and the lantern was made.

Monday Previews!

Greetings! Last week we had a unofficial holiday here on the blog. A combination of holidays, Internet going down and work shenanigans, meant content was pretty much non-existent. This week however we are back on track with project updates from the entire team and for those interested in miniature transport solutions, pay special attention this Thursday as we have a special set of product reviews focusing on the Feldherr Figure Case and Foam range. And finally, Prodos Game's AvP (Aliens Vs Predator) board game if finally shipping to Kickstarter Backers, so hopefully my copy will arrive in good time for me to a review.

Anyway, onwards with the models!

Chris/DiStudios
If you are starting to get tired of seeing Trolls, well sorry no change! I have finally reached the fifth and final troll of my original Salute purchase - Gjoll, who is a standard bearer for the unit. With him in the photo are the wip's of the Hrafnen Crew, who I made a start on a couple of weeks back.My intention is to paint these lot at the same time, and perhaps get both sets finished for the end of the week.

Once these are finished, I have plans to paint something big for the collection, currently it is a coin toss between a giant with a hammer, a giant raven and a giant mouth with fangs!

During the last week I just managed some more steps on the Kingsmen. I finished the red, the feathers and added the first coat of metals to the armour. Again the true metals have the problem of lacking depth, so some inking and black lining might be needed.

As promised in the last preview I have another Kingdom Death article prepared for Wednesday, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

This weeks photo is of Mag Ap Mag, Prifdynwocor of Powrs. He is a War chief of one of the two monstrous creatures factions for Brythoniaid, the other being Dragonmen.
Sadly, his foot soldiers haven't shipped yet so he's all on his own at the moment. One of the things I really like about him, is that he reminds me of a Skettis from the Dark Crystal.

So despite all the lovely sunshine and warm weather, the team has decided to lock itself away in the dark and make/paint more models, and I for one, would not have it any other way haha!

Gallery: Darklands Norse - Nisurl, Troll Warrior By DiStudios

Nisurl was painted immediately after Gurrir, but once again was not completed until after Vortun had been finished. Because he is one of the earlier painted trolls, he shares a lot of the older colour scheme; like the pink snout; and there are points of brush work, that look rougher than on Vortun. Despite this, I was very happy with the way the hardened brown hide had developed at this point, and it helped make my mind up that it would stay a consistent theme through out the entire troll unit. I also started doing much better work on the belly transitions with Nisurl, which helped solidify a routine to get this technique done. With the new weapon paint job put in place, Nisurl really comes together properly as a miniature, as the weapons are such solid plates of metal (or resin in this case!) that they become the main focal point in the photos.

Gallery: Darklands Infernii - Malacant, Servile Champion of Dis By Sven

This article features the first “miniature” from my newest Darklands host. Like DiStudios' Birna, my Malacant is a Warchief for its demonic kindred which is called the Infernii. The Infernii represent the demons that have allied with the Roman Empire and is quite an awesome combination in my opinion. Additionally Malacant is one of the rare sculpts by Dan Cockersell and without a doubt an awesome one.

Monday Previews!

Greetings all, I hope you had an awesome weekend! It's Monday, so as usual it is time to see just what all of us are up to here at Send The Eighth! Wargaming.

Chris/DiStudios
Well despite the complete change of direction, I had some really good painting weekend. Originally I was meant to work on Knutr and the Hrafnen crew but Friday night I could not resist the temptation of my Norse trolls. As a result, two more warriors are now complete and the third is well on the way. Gjoll; the standard bearer; is ready to get his base coat of green, but I suspect that painting him up may take a little longer than the two days it is currently taking me to finish a troll miniature.

With the trolls moving at a good pace, I am quite excited about tackling Jormungand or Thorir - Troll characters - both those models are loaded with detail and I am really in the mood for picking out all the little wrinkles, cuts and warts!

As I’m still consumed by stupid non-hobby tasks I didn’t manage to get more paint on the Kingsmen, but as I’m currently preparing my next KD article, which will be released on Wednesday in a week, I thought I’d show you the photograph I used for inspiration.
I’m quite positive that the resulting miniature is one of my best works so far. So stay tuned!

After a weeks modelling hiatus, decided I would put together this lovely Mierce dragon who goes by the name of Typhaggahw, Gwyfern of Ceredigion, (don't ask me to pronounce it, lol). Really loving the Brythoniaid faction, the Welsh, and it's dragons.

Pretty sure I now have everything currently available and the rest of them on pre-order so I probably ought to make time putting some more together and maybe getting back into painting again.  So little time, so much to do....

So trolls, goats and dragons. Lorna is still getting into the swing of things hobby wise, she will most likely be on a fortnightly update. The collections here are really turning into something great and I can't wait to see more of these critters painted up in the future. Being a avid figure/statue collector as well as painter, I have been starting to think about a new display case for my Mierce collection. While it is still early days on that front, it is something I feel writing articles on will be useful, but more on that soon, need the painted toys to fill it first!
