Happy New Year!

Greetings all, and a belated Happy Holidays from the Send The Eighth! Team. Due to the nature of the respective careers, this time of year is normally very quiet for the us here on the blog. But with the holiday season coming to an end and more importantly another year! I would like to thank our readership for following and supporting us over the last 5 odd years.

Next month we will be back to our regular schedule, Sven will be bringing more of his lovely Kingdom Death photo shoots to the blog, while I will be showcasing commissions completed for Word Forge Games, as well as my brand new Chaos Daemons army.

So lots of cool stuff from next week!

With that in mind we wish you a Happy and prosperous New Year! See you in 2016!

 With thanks,

Gallery: Kingdom Death - Frogdog By Sven

*WARNING THIS KINGDOM DEATH PIECE IS NSFW!!*

Yeah! Finally it’s time for some serious “WTF” and totally “NSFW” again! …I wonder whether my glee upon that topic is something I should be questioning… nah, probably normal (says my cat). Well, back on topic: Today’s model is a result of my favourite creative team. Concept by Adam Poots, artwork by Danny Cruz and sculpted by Allan Carrasco. That team is responsible for two of my absolutely most loved sculpts: The Forge God and the Lion God (which I’m still waiting to be released in resin). So we’re totally in for something truly weird today, the model goes by the rather harmless name of  “Frogdog”, but nothing could be more deceptive.

Gallery: Kingdom Death - Savior and Man-Hunter By Sven

Today I have a special installation of my Kingdom Death Gallery for you. I managed to get my hands on a big part of my Kingdom Death collection with the help of my pal DiStudios and he had already started to work on two figures from the Gift of Death-Box when I asked him for the miniatures. The Savior and the Man-Hunter. It was a cool challenge to finish the paintjob of another painter.

Let’s begin with the Savior:

Monday Previews!

Good morning! I hope you had a great Halloween weekend. With the weather turning colder and days getting shorter, the team here at Send The Eighth! are starting to get fully into the hobby swing, so without further delay, lets have a look and see what is being worked on...

Chris/DiStudios
The cold months and encroaching darkness can  mean only one thing: Chaos Approaches! My collection of 3rd Edition Chaos figures is growing at quite a rate, far beyond the initial Warband I had planned. And although it is mostly from the Beastman range, this coming week should see the arrival of more interesting bits.

However currently on the table, is my Chaos Champion Of Khorne. I was fortunate in that I actually rolled a Champion on Juggernaut, and also that I was able to get a miniature still in it's blister pack. However, despite being an authentic cast, there is a lot of cleaning to do on the Juggernaut itself, so it will be a while until paint is applied. But with a bit of patience and hard work, the end result will pay off.

To see more of work, please visit my Gallery

Sven
I'm really having a blast with Kingdom Death: Monster! The game is awesome and the miniatures are of stunning quality. We just had our second session last Friday and it was even more fun, as we got a better hold of the rules. Before that I was so thrilled by our first session that I spent several evenings building characters from the armour sets. Certainly a modular/magnetised solution would have been super awesome, but just too tiresome to do and would have caused problems with my OSL painting.
So I decided to built a model for most weapon combinations and most likely builds. I was good fun to develop all those characters. Have a look at the results:

Now I just have to wait for my Wave 1 shipping which supplies me with the needed bases and some nice plastic and resin miniatures. Can't wait!

To see more of my work, please visit my Gallery

So there you have it, I have to admit from the looks of the projects going on, Autumn/winter is bringing out our much darker sides. Stay tuned this week to get more specifics on the projects as they unfold!

Realms Of Chaos: A Champion Rises! By Chris

So today I did something a little random.  Keeping in theme with the Chaos Warbands ideal, I decided to roll my Chaos Champion and his retinue. This gives me some nice direction for the collection and stops me going overboard with the buying; because in all honesty buying old Warhammer is not cheap at times. So today I am going to share my just exactly what I rolled on those masses of D100 and D1000 tables...

Realms Of Chaos: Welcome (Back) To The Wastelands By Chris

Greetings and welcome (back) to the Wastelands! regular followers will have noticed that my Twitter feed has been rife with Oldhammer activities. What was meant to be a small addition to an existing project, has very quickly spiraled into a full blown collection. For the uninitiated (or simply not old enough), Realms Of Chaos was one of a pair of iconic books released in the 80's that set the tone for all things Chaos in the world of Warhammer/Age Of Sigmar. Back then miniatures were single pose individual miniatures, which held a huge amount of character. It is this 'character' that the miniatures had, that pretty much set up Games Workshop as the dominant force in the toy solider industry.

Monday Previews!

Greetings everyone! it's Monday, which means time to have a look at what is going on with the writers here at Send The Eighth! As always a eclectic selection of miniatures are flying about...

Chris/DiStudios
I have been hit by the nostalgia bat! What started off as a idea, is starting to transform into something altogether bigger. The original concept was to get the odd Beastman miniature from the Realms Of Chaos range to bring a little colour to my fledgling Daemon army. However after having so much fun painting them, I have decided that the army will now become a Daemon World army. For those who don't know, the fundamental difference is that a Daemon World army is a mix of mortals and Daemons from worlds within the Warp, so contain elements of Beastmen, Minotaurs, Daemons and renegade humans!

I have around a dozen very old Beastmen either in the post, undercoated or sitting in paint stripper. It is all extremely nostalgic! From a painting perspective, I am having an absolute blast, since it brings me back to being a kid and more importantly, each and every model is an individual with every sculpt having it's own distinct character to it.

Even if these never see the table, they will probably be the jewels in my new display cabinet!

Following my last preview I went right on and tackled the first starting miniatures. As I now have most of the models as resin pieces as well, I aimed for a moody look that's easy to do and doesn't need me to paint all the figures twice. Due to all the lanterns, the dark setting and the board art the models just lend themselves to some monochrome light source painting. Never tried it before, but they are just gaming pieces, so the result fit my expectations quite well. Have a look:

Already started on more survivors and some monsters, but will have to find a solution to get faces on the monster bases. Might have to try out moulding for the first time...

So plenty of cool stuff going on, ranging from nostalgic 80's miniatures to contemporary horror. If you enjoy looking at fully painted miniatures, please visit our respective galleries. Also keep your eyes on our Twitter feed as I have some very cool commission miniatures to share throughout the week!

Gallery: Kingdom Death - White Knight By Sven

The White Knight was a long time enigma of Kingdom Death. It was mentioned in several instances in the fluff of other models and when it was finally released it was yet another piece to the puzzle that is the Golden Entity and its army.

Darklands: Savage Hordes Kickstarter Ending!

Darklands Savage Horde, the latest Kickstarter expansion from Mierce Miniatures is ending tonight at 6:00pm BST As of this morning, they have over £42,000 and have smashed through all but one of their stretch goals. So if you have been sitting on the fence waiting for things to unlock, now is the perfect time to jump in as pretty much everything has been unlocked. In addition to the new ranged support hosts, they are again offering the infantry hosts deals to people who back the project, with availability in both high quality resin and metal, there is definitely something for everyone. Below is Alix of Carn Bran, the latest sell sword to be unlocked and a map of the infantry support hosts available for the duration of this Kickstarter.

There is only 9 HOURS left to go on this project and as mentioned almost all their goals have been hit. If you like Dark Fantasy with a hint of historical, you really need to check out Mierce Miniatures range of figures.

Monday Previews!

Greetings all, it's Monday; which means time to see what the writers here at Send The Eighth! have been working on.

Chris/DiStudios
Despite what was a great start, it has unfortunately been a very bad hobby week for me! I made the mistake of following the Games Workshop video on painting the Bloodthirster and the results were less than satisfying. If you are ok with gaming standard dry brushed creatures, then it is a fine method to use, but for me there was a lot lacking, when compared to some of the other figures I have painted this year. So as a result no pictures for me today as the Bloodthirster is now sitting in a pile of power spray...

To make up for, this week I will instead be working on some Bloodcrushers of Khorne; which should be arriving tomorrow; to use as a dry run for painting the rest of the army. Despite the rules, I am a big fan of the models and am looking forward to having those in my collection. Now if only they would hurry up and release some plastic Flesh Hounds!

I guess it's already well-known that Kingdom Death: Monster finally reached its backers. Last Monday was the happy day for me and when I came home from work a big and heavy box awaited.
My excitement was huge and from what I can tell my box is complete and without flaws. The sheer amount of tiny bits on the sprues is fearsome though, and naturally I took some pictures!
The box came with two additional cardboard boxes, one was in the main box, the other holds the additional Kickstarter bonus pieces:

Of course I couldn't restrain myself from building some stuff right away. Basically I finished all miniatures that don't belong to the highly customisable armour sets, as I'm unsure on what set-up I should build them in. The Phoenix was a special puzzle, as the building instructions are not on line yet, I had to find the right spots for 28 tiny hands on its wings. Somehow it was great fun:

Overall the quality of the plastics is great (especially the Phoenix). The only thing that didn't fully hold up to my expectations was the rulebook. The print is great, but the pages are very thin and the black softcover is very easily damaged. There were also some minor glue streams that kinda soil the artwork on the first page. As unboxings seem to be everywhere on the net, I'll be focusing more on the miniatures for the upcoming articles on KD:M and maybe a gaming report once in a while. Can't wait to get my hands on wave 1 and 3.

To see more of my work, please visit my Gallery

So some disasters and some surprises! Hopefully this week will go a little better for me, but in Sven's case; I cannot wait to see what submits in the future!

Product Review: Wrath Of Kings By Sven

As previously shown in a past Mondays Preview, I’ve lately received some nice boxes from the Wrath of Kings Kickstarter by CMoN. The Kingdom Death nerd in me couldn’t resist the temptation of a nice cross-over miniature and when I looked through their stuff, I fell in love with the concept art of the Ancient King and Orsund Cavalier. Nice thing is that each model fits for one of my collected ranges.

Let’s begin with the Ancient King. It’s a promo model with absolutely ridiculous rules and not really supposed to see play. I got it because I loved the art and thought it’d be a nice Tomb King.

Monday Previews!

Greetings everyone, it's Monday so time to have a little look at what the writers here have been doing recently.

Chris/DiStudios
Finally my new project is here! The release of Skarbrand has resulted in a bit of a Khorne revival for me. However rather than going the power armour route; like my old Khorne Berserker army from 2000; I have decided to go with a daemonic horde. Despite the fact it is a mono Khorne collection, the decision to collect was based very much on variety. Having a Chaos Daemon army actually gives me more gaming options, with lists available for Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy!

Right now I have one Bloodthirster built and ready for liquid green stuff, and a partially cleaned/built Skarbrand. A decent start I would say to my Khornate monstrous horde! However, waiting for me to pic up are twenty Bloodletters and Samus himself...

With the freshly released full rules for Darklands we've been trying to get a grasp of these very detailed and cinematic rule set. Our latest game saw the Infernii demons of Dis facing off against the furry Rhino-hordes from the North.

The game was decided in one brutal slamming and stomping assault of hellfirey death. It's incredible what kind of options these rules offer. As soon as we're more firm, I'll make sure to get an battle report on line.

An amazing photo from Sven and a new project for me, looks like it is a busy start to autumn!

Darklands: Savage Hordes Kickstarter

Mierce Miniatures are at it again, with a brand new Kickstarter - Darklands: Savage Hordes! This new KS deals with bringing the ranged element to the existing armies of the Darklands universe, with archers, crossbows and possibly artillery being thrown into the mix. With this new expansion comes a new expansion rule set, which will cover the above mentioned units. Right now, two factions are being offered, but of course like with all KS, new toys will be unlocked as we roll on. For now, take a look below at the two lovely factions being initially offered: Albainn and Jutes. For those who have no experience with Mierce Miniatures, the miniatures follow extremely closely to the the artwork especially in terms of detail.

The high quality resin sets; which is similar to what Studio McVey; clock in at £90, however metal versions of the sets are also being offered at £60, which significantly brings the cost down for those looking to bag large amounts of high detailed miniatures for army building. I personally have gone for the resin, as I just prefer working with resin these days. This time round, I will be doing my very best to keep readers here up to date on the Darklands project, but as always, visit the project directly for the most up to date news.

As a final note, the core rule book is coming into it's final stages before being sent to printers, so it means there will be a dedicated system for all of these lovely miniatures. All I can say, is that if you are not a fan of the simplicity of AoS, and miss the challenging complexity of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, then you probably should check out what Mierce Miniatures has to offer. To see learn more about Mierce Miniatures and their rule set (free PDFs) check out their site - Mierce Miniatures

Darklands: Savage Hordes is up and running now, with 19 days on the clock! Keep a close eye as we lead into the weekend, as I am sure the Mierce team will be unveiling brand new artwork, which is always worth a view.

Monday Previews!

Greetings on this rather grey looking day. It's Monday, so why not wipe away those start of week blues by taking a look at some of the projects being worked on by the Send The Eighth! writers. We have a good mix of projects today, which will make for a much more interesting read.

Chris/DiStudios
I have not had a lot of luck with GW products recently. Each GW/FW project seems to become a black hole of cash, while simultaneously creating a mountain of resin, which I inevitably end up selling off. So it was a total surprise to me, that I would be inspired by a few left pieces from a forgotten bits box. Below is the starts to a new Crimson Fists force; and in case you are having deja vu; yes I did actually start a Crimson Fists project a while back, however there is one subtle difference - these is Rogue Trader themed.

In a throw back to my child hood, I am making my force entirely out of MK 6 Corvus armour, with the 25th Anniversary figure acting as Pedro Kantor, and as you can see from above, I have made some progress since starting the project 24 hours ago, with the blues in the final phases of painting. Forge World's Horus Heresy range has proven incredibly useful, not just in the armour department, but also vehicles, with the Deimos pattern Rhino chassis, being the perfect update for Rogue Trader's original. I am quite excited about this project as an addition to my Mierce Norse collection and am looking forward to sharing my progress.

This weekend another of my Kickstarter projects paid off. After quite some waiting time; and after I piggybacked a supporter of CoolMiniOrNots's Wrath of Kings; my three models finally arrived. Basically that order ties in with every single of my active projects. I got an awesome octopus mount for my Darklands Fomoraic, and Kingdom Death cross-over and the Ancient King for my Tomb Kings.

As you can see the boxes are really nice and huge (I included the other models to give you a comparison). While the octopus is quite big, the Twilight Knight and Ancient King are just regular 28mm models, so the packaging could be considered a bit lavish. I feel really thrilled about those models and can't wait to get to work on them. When I do so I'll do a proper un-boxing, as there's quite some nice stuff to be seen.

To see the rest of my work, please visit my Gallery

Hellstrom
Something a little different this Monday as I have a Horus Heresy Deimos Vindicator Laser Destroyer that I constructed and have started to paint for my Iron Hands. I Felt it was something that would nicely compliment my somewhat neglected collection.

I also just received another order from Mierce, Banelords and Banebeasts, so will probably be putting those together during the week. Some really lovely figures among them so will enjoy photographing them after construction.

So lots of new toys and projects going on, a little something for everyone!

Gallery: Darklands Infernii - Fiends of Dis By Sven

Finally it’s the Inferniis' turn again in my grand Darklands showcase series. Since I showed you Malacant I’ve shown a model of each of my other hosts and I think it’s more than time to show you the backbone of my army - The Fiends of Dis, a unit of five demonic monstrous infantry.

Site News: Holiday Over!

Greeting all! This week I decided that the team needed a little break to re-charge creative batteries. The last four months or so have been a constant barrage of miniature building, painting, gaming and articles. Sometimes there is such a thing as 'to much of a good thing', so a little break was in order to prevent burn out. Everyone is now back on their feet (including me!) and we have some excellent miniature content to start sharing next week. As per normal, tune in on Monday to get some insight into what we are working on!

While on my break I started considering expanding our coverage, I am a notorious Anime fan, comic, figure and statue collector! And I am in discussions with the rest of the writers as to whether we should cover the above topics in addition to Miniatures. Nothing will be diluted, but choices will be larger - that is the premise anyway!

So thanks for sticking around during our little R'n'R we shall strike back with painted miniature goodness from next week!

Monday Previews!

Good morning! I hope you all had an awesome and productive hobby weekend. As always, it is Monday, which means time to have a look at what the writers here at Send The Eighth! are up to.

Chris/DiStudios
After a brief calm before the storm moment, the Norse Trolls are back! On the table this week, are the awesome Armoured Trolls of Toheim. As I understand it, these were sculpted by a fan of the original Norse Troll unit, with the main difference being hammers and heavy armour for equipment. To accompany them I have already cleaned and primed Thorir Troll Konungr (King), who was picked up at Salute this year as a pre-release. Finally just sneaking in, you can probably see Geat Warrior Trytheorn, who I think is based on one of the Kickstarter backers, it is a great miniature with a fantastic pose and lots of detail.

At the back you will probably see that two of the Armoured trolls are actually lacking arms, luckily for me awesome Rob has said he would provide replacements for me - with customer service and awesome miniatures like these, it is easy to see why people (including me) support this brand!

On a random note, once the above is primed and base coated, I will be left with only nine Norse figures in queue to started...

With the imminent arrival of Kingdom Death: Monster and the awesome game play videos from GenCon I really can't wait for the delivery. So in honour of that I thought I would share a freshly un-boxed KD mini with you today.

The White Knight (Heavy) is one of the few models from KD that comes with options. In this case one can choose between a huge spiked ball or an hammer with a lion face. I'm really unsure which one to choose. The ball is just awesomely brutal but the chain will be super brittle. The hammer is less flashy, but carries much more of the KD-vibe. ATM I'm tending towards the hammer and maybe if I get my hands on an Encore one day and build that with the ball.
To see more of my work, please visit my Gallery
Unfortunately Lorna was unable to share her awesome Ysian host in today's Monday Previews, she is simply too busy with work. However we may see an independent article from her in the next two weeks. This will be well worth waiting for, as quite frankly, the Ysian range of miniatures are mind blowing, the level of detail on even the basic infantry is something rather special. Also plans are in motion for a new project for myself, so if you are a fan of the Horus Heresy, stay tuned...

Gallery: Kingdom Death - King's Hand By Sven

I’ve been talking so much about the King’s Hand so I guess it’s finally time to get the final pictures out there. The Hand is a pristine sculpt with an awesome Berserk vibe to it. Most obvious are of course the great detail on the armour and the head.

Monday Previews!

Good morning it's Monday, which means time to see what the Send The Eighth! team is working on. So onwards with the toys...

Chris/DiStudios
I have been extremely busy this last week, working on some large Warzone Resurrection projects, which means not a lot of time for my own pieces. What little spare time I had this weekend, was spent working on the personalised shield colours for my Hrafnen crew. So far I have a nice selection of colours, which I feel give a bit more of a authentic feel to the Hrafnen crew. For me the Hrafnen crew; as sculpts; are quite far away from the archetypal Norse/Viking image, so anything that brings them more in-line is a good thing. In keeping with tradition, I have also decided to steer clear of any uniform for the clothing. This decision came about after working on Birna. Once I applied her colour scheme as an across the board scheme, the army suddenly took on a Riders Of Rohan feel, which I did not like at all.

I have also experimented with a spare 'scavenged shield' from one of my trolls. I think it looks great and again; closer to the traditional Viking look. My hope is that Mierce Miniatures makes another heavy armoured unit (chain mail shirts) that look a lot more traditional, as one of the most redeeming factor of this range, is the throw back to historical accuracy coupled with high fantasy.

To see more of my work, please visit my Gallery

Sven
Seeing all my old, poorly painted Tomb Kings; I painted the majority of those over 10 years ago; I just couldn't bear it and decided to touch them up a bit. So right now my desk is flooded with Egyptian skeletons and given my highly rare hobby time at the moment I guess it will stay like this for a while.

Hm, that also brings back all my old conversion ideas... where's my bitz box..?

To see more of my work, please visit my Gallery

So the Fantasy vibe marches on! This week, I should be receiving a lovely box of miniatures from Mierce. Not only does this delivery contain a new character for me, but also much the much needed reinforcements for Lorna's Ysians,. You can pretty much guarantee a game will be brewing for next weekend and more than likely you will see pictures of Lorna's expanded collection of miniatures in the coming weeks.
